Jewelry Beyond Form

Sakurako Shimizu is a New York–based Japanese designer and jewelry artist, also trained as a jewelry craftsman. Her work is best known for technologically driven conceptual jewelry that translates invisible data into wearable form.

She often works with playful visualizations of digital technology, including sound waveforms, computer hardware, and programming code. Through these elements, Sakurako creates jewelry that offers new visual and psychological experiences, transforming personal and intangible moments into lasting objects.

Her most well-known body of work, the Sound Waveform Series, began in 2007 and features one-of-a-kind pieces representing human expressions and the everyday sounds that surround us.

 In 2008, she expanded the series to custom-made wedding bands using the waveform of a couple’s own voices. The I Do wedding ring project offers a timeless and intimate way to carry a partner’s wedding vows or other meaningful phrases.

Sakurako continues to create custom wedding bands and bespoke jewelry for clients in the United States and internationally. 

Her waveform jewelry has been featured in numerous international magazines, design books, and prominent blogs, and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
